Why did you get involved in Conservative Young Women?
I found Conservative Young Women on Instagram when they were advertising an event with Andrea Leadsom during lockdown. I found this opportunity priceless to be able to attend a Q&A with great women in politics which was so accessible. Events are organised very often and it’s a great way to hear other peoples stories. There are many friendly people I have networked with at Conservative Young Women, who all have similar interests and ambitions as I do.
How have Conservative Young Women supported you in standing?
Nicole Richer is great, she has a WhatsApp group for all the candidates to support each other and offer friendly help. Several events have been set up to offer training on connect calling, which many of the women are keen to help candidates with.
What kind of jobs have you had in the past?
I am still enjoying my university experience. However alongside my BSc and MRes I have worked part time as a waitress. I now treat my PhD as a full-time job, working as a scientific researcher.
How do you think we can encourage more young women into politics?
I think many of us truly have political interests, I think it comes as we decide what our passions and ambitions are. I think we need to emphasise how we as young women involved in politics can really make a change and get our voices heard.
Why did you decide to get involved in Politics?
I had always been a supporter of the party, however not involved with very little political knowledge. I found an email in my spam (luckily!) from my local chairman asking if I would be interested in standing as a candidate and become more involved with the association. As a scientist and during the pandemic, it was natural for me to be rather engaged with politics at this time, standing as a candidate felt like a great opportunity. I found a lot of my passions were politically relevant and I had many values align with the party. I have found passion in the discussions I have with my friends from my association and CYW, I believe politics has encouraged me to stand up for what I believe in.
Why did you decide to stand to be a local Councillor?
This was an opportunity I hadn’t ever considered, or didn’t really see as possible! I was approached by my local association as they were looking for young women to stand. I felt really nervous about the idea of standing, however I liked the idea of stepping out my comfort zone and pushing for change in my town.
